A. Atoms & Elements

B. The Elements-
C. Meet the Elements

D. Bill Nye- Atomic Saloon
E. Phases of Matter- Bill Nye

1/31

Elements, Mixtures, Compounds

1. Brainstorm the differences between physical and chemical changes in science journal then Discuss the differences between physical and chemical changes

2. Participate in an activity to differentiate between elements, compounds, and mixtures- The Properties Song

3. Understand that chemical changes produce new substances by rearranging the atoms and that physical changes do not produce new substances therefore they are just mixtures that can be separated

NJCCCS 5.1  & 5.6

30.Elements, Compounds, Mixtures/ Parts of the Atom

Subatomic Particles

1. Review the differences between elements, mixtures, and compounds: 30.Elements, Compounds, Mixtures/ Parts of the Atom

2. Determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom (Atomic #= protons=electrons) (Neutrons=Atomic Mass- Atomic Number)

3. Draw models of an atom with the protons and neutrons in the nucleus and and electrons outside the nucleus

2/3 The Periodic Table

1.  Discuss how the Periodic Table is organized according to the properties of elements and increasing atomic number and how Dmitri Mendeleev put the elements in order: Mendeleev Song

2. Color code the periodic table identifying the periods (rows) and the different families (columns) and discuss the properties of the elements and how and why they are organized into the different periods and families

3. Draw an atom showing the protons (+) and neutrons in the nucleus with the electrons (-) in the electron shells
