2/6

Chemistry of Life

1. Read p.9-13 in Chemical Interactions Resources book to understand where the Earth elements are found in living things, the ocean, the sky, the universe

2. Complete the paragraph on p. 29. Cell Processes-1 to distinguish between organic and inorganic compounds, elements, and atoms

3. Complete the worksheet: 31. Cell Processes- Sec 1 Content Mastery/ Reinforcement  to better understand the differences between organic and inorganic compounds

2/7

Number of Atoms and Elements

1.Go over 31. Cell Processes- Sec 1 Content Mastery/ Reinforcement  to better understand the differences between organic and inorganic compounds

2.  Understand how to figure out the number of atoms and elements in a compound: # of Atoms- count capital letters, # of elements- count subscripts remembering that if there is not subscript then it = 1

3. Practice counting the number of elements and atoms in a compound

NJCCCS 5.1  & 5.6

32. Number of Atoms/ Balancing Equations

2/8 Study Island NJ ASK 8 Review

1. Review the topic Matter- phases of matter, physical and chemical changes, mixtures and solutions

2. Review the differences between atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds

2. Prepare for NJ ASK by using the the Studyisland.com website to review  Science lessons: Standard 5.6, 5.7 :  Chemistry

NJCCCS 5.1 ,5.2 , 5.3 & 5.4, 5.5 5.6, 5.7

Assignments #3

Be ready for a quiz on # of Atoms/ Elements/ compounds/ subatomic particles

2/9 Analyzing Substances

1. Demonstrate knowledge of atoms, elements, and compounds on a quiz: number of atoms, elements, subatomic particles, protons, neutrons, electrons

2
. Review chemical formulas as symbolic representations for substances and learn that the fundamental building blocks of substances are atoms.

. 3.Make and analyze representations of particles of familiar substances

NJCCCS 5.1  & 5.6

Assignments #3

2/10

Chemical Reactions

1. Observe a demonstration of the reaction of HCL +NaHCO3 to produce Co2 + H20 + NaCl

2.Use atom tiles to create representations of the reactant molecules and rearrange them to make product molecules. When they are satisfied that they have re-created the reaction, they write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction, using standard conventions.

3. Prepare to evaporate the water from the salt and the Calcium Carbonate from the water in the Limewater test for Carbon Dioxide

NJCCCS 5.1  & 5.6
