Week 5

Date Objective/ Procedure Handouts/ Labs Homework
10/3

Introduction to the Microscope-1

1. Go over parts of microscope and tools in the kit used to make wet and dry mounts

2. Prepare a dry mount and view images under the microscope to understand the orientation of objects

3. Focus the microscope using the coarse and fine adjustment knobs and different objectives

NJCCCS 5.1  & 5.2

4. Microscope Images/Field of View and Magnification

10/4

Introduction to the Microscope-2
1. Science Journal: what happens to the orientation of  images under the microscope- what do you do if you need to find an organism on the right, left,  towards the top of the slide, etc.

2. Prepare a wet mount and view images under the microscope to understand the orientation of objects

3. Draw scale representations of images seen under a microscope to estimate size accurately

NJCCCS 5.1  & 5.5

10/5

Explore Micro World-Day 1

1. Prepare a wet mount and view images under the microscope to understand the orientation of objects

2. Measure the field of view under each objective 4X, 10X, 40X

3. Draw scale representations of images seen under a microscope to estimate size accurately

NJCCCS 5.1  & 5.5

10.Using the Microscope- Field of View & Magnification

10.Using the Microscope- Field of View & Magnification
10/6

Explore Micro World-Day 2

1. Science Journal: Determine the total magnification and field of view for the 4x, 10x, and 40x objectives

2. Review Field of View and how to determine cell size (40x= 4mm, 100x= 1.8 mm, 400x= .4 mm)

3. Set up mini ponds with outdoor materials for later microscopic observation

NJCCCS 5.1  & 5.5

10.Using the Microscope- Field of View & Magnification

10/7 Virtual Microscope

1. Go to  Diversity of Life Website multimedia to view lab techniques videos & use the virtual microscope to practice lab techniques
User Name: wtbscience
Password: bloomingdale

2. A. Go to Lab- lab techniques and watch the first four videos to better understand the parts and techniques used to view specimens
B.  Go to Lab- virtual microscope and explore orientation, magnification, and focal plane

3. Go to Virtual Electron Microscope & Online Digital Microscope to view different specimens online and take practice quizzes: Microscope Parts Quiz
Microscope Parts Quiz 2  to check knowledge of the parts and care of the microscope

NJCCCS 5.1  & 5.5
